Two children keep you busy (spring 2008)

Two children really do keep us busy! Eliza is older now, about three months, and is sleeping well at night and in the morning. Afternoons can be somewhat fussier, with longer periods without rest, but we're working on it. She has very good head control now, and smiles and giggles and coos, trying out all the sounds her voice can make. She likes lying on her activity mat and batting and grabbing at the objects above, and likes sitting in infant chairs or her carrier so she can look at everything going on. Tummy-time is less fun, but us mean parents make her lie on her tummy and do pushups now and then... Recently she's started enjoying peekaboo games. By now she can take the bottle or the breast with style and panache, which gives us more flexibility with Melissa's work schedule.

Benjamin loves his baby sister and gives her lots of hugs and kisses, and makes funny faces to entertain her and make her smile. He's gotten somewhat over the phase of being jealous that she had some of his old toys. Benjamin has been busy over the last couple of months as well. He now has a library card from the Santa Clara Library, and uses it to check out his own books and DVDs. He's working on his reading skills, but not quite there yet. He participated in a dance performance of Sleeping Beauty put on by the dance program at his preschool. We've played a bunch with Alex and Peter and Seth and others, and had several visits from other families, as well as driving here and there to visit other new babies. Benjamin is fascinated by maps (esp. of amusement parks-Season Passes are cool when you live 15 min. from one!) and really into making up stories and doing art projects.

Joel's parents Gary and Mary visited Memorial Day weekend, and Gary also flew down late in June by himself, to spend time with grandchildren. We've also spent time splashing around in Benjamin's backyard pool at the Gilberts', great on hot summer afternoons. Melissa has started teaching her summer session class at Santa Clara, so Joel has more time to teach Eliza the Polish Club bidding system.
