Eliza's a little more than five weeks old now, and is just starting to produce the "social" smiles, responding to our silly attempts at getting her to grin. Sometimes she prefers to be held rather than to go to sleep in her car seat or on her boppy pillow or in her crib. All in all, she has reasonable sleeping habits, getting as much as five hours some nights, but the randomness of the schedule can be daunting. There are times when it seems she has an insatiable appetite. She certainly has her fussy periods, but it doesn't look like we'll be fighting with colic, thank god. At her one-month appointment last week she was a healthy 10 lbs 10 ozs, and an off-the-charts 23.5 inches long. We've added lots of pictures of her, many with her sleeping -- after all, those ones are much more attractive then the ones in which she's howling for attention...
Benjamin's adjusted really well to the arrival of his baby sister, hugging her often and being somewhat helpful with diaper changes. He does like to entertain the baby and try to make her laugh. He doesn't so much like the times when mommy or daddy can't give him attention because we're taking care of the baby, but thems the breaks, kid. We did have a great time throwing him a belated birthday-in-the-park party. Also, we hosted a Passover seder at our house for the first time. Thanks to all our friends who have been so helpful and patient with us, bringing us food, playing with Benjamin, and holding Eliza now and then to give us a break!
I'm sure there's more we've done in the last month, but my sleep-deprived brain can't recall anything at the moment. A typical midnight wakening has me fixing Melissa a snack, working on the crossword puzzle with her while she feeds the hungry child, maybe answering a bit of email...that's the life of a young parent! More in a couple months.
