"I AM A zEN LUNATIC"

A Interview by Lucy Kelly

A word from the Director:

This brief interview explores the possibility of Buddhism in America. It looks at previous Buddhist waves of interest from the Beat Generation and aims to depict what it means to be an American Buddhist. In this video and throughout this website I present the idea of Kerouac’s term, Stating that “Zen Lunacy” is American Buddhism. By having conversations like these on the topic of Buddhism in America, viewers are able to see how practices that date back to the 560 B.C.E. spread and are still being used today. The interview presents Buddhism as a way of living rather than a religion and the Zen minds behind the camera are all “dharma bums.” Buddhism tries to answer life’s biggest questions and through exploring this, we see young Zen Lunatics seeking these answers through their own practice. And maybe they are just a bunch of “rucksack wanderers” looking for some purpose to life… or maybe they see the possibility for Buddhism to change the world.
