Growing up in the Bay Area, Sarah always was attracted to the idea of a life in the country, close to nature and animals. Her first ambition was to go into veterinary medicine, but while attending the University of California, Davis, she gravitated toward the university’s esteemed viticulture and enology program. She had spent a lot of time in the wine country with family friends when she was growing up, and food and wine had always been a big part of her life. Becoming a winemaker seemed like a natural progression.
After receiving a B.S. degree in Fermentation Science, specializing in Enology, she gained experience by completing harvest internships at Gloria Ferrer Sparkling Winery in Sonoma, Joseph Phelps Winery in St. Helena, where her mentor was Craig Williams, and at Wirra Wirra in South Australia’s McClaren Vale, all within three years. In 1994, she returned to Joseph Phelps Winery as assistant winemaker, becoming head winemaker in 2002. Two years later, she became winemaker at Quintessa in St. Helena.
Sarah joined Oakville East as its winemaker in 2004. She is also the consulting winemaker for Blackbird Winery and Clif Family Winery, and directs a family project, Joel Gott Wines, which she and her husband, Joel, started in 1996.
Sarah is a triathlete, and she and her husband have three children.
