Grow Wines (Co-Winemaker and Co-Owner)
Sequoia Grove Winery (Winemaker)
Molly Hill is the winemaker for Sequoia Grove Winery in Rutherford, California. Although Molly began at Sequoia Grove at the relatively young age of 24, she came with the experience of working at a number of other wineries, both large and small. Her career in the wine world began before she was legally able to drink when she took a quarter off from her studies in Biology at the University of California, Davis, to work at Beringer Wine Estates. This experience brought about a change of major to Viticulture and Enology, which she began studying intensively on a year-long study-abroad trip to Lincoln University in New Zealand.
Upon returning and during her continued studies at UC Davis to complete her B.S. in V&E and her minor in Spanish, she worked harvest making pinot noir at Domaine Carneros. A subsequent harvest following graduation in 2002 was at Sea Smoke Cellars, a small pinot noir-producing start-up winery in the blossoming Santa Rita Hills appellation. During a stint in Chile at a custom-crush winery called Viña Isidro, Molly was made a job offer by Michael Trujillo, Sequoia Grove’s winemaker at the time. Although a cabernet house was a complete change from making pinot noir, Michael’s passion for the grape and the potential at Sequoia Grove made it impossible to say no to the position.
Molly began work at Sequoia Grove in July 2003 and was promoted to Winemaker in June 2008. Michael, who has been with Sequoia Grove since its beginnings in1982, currently is Director of Winemaking and President, and has delegated oversight of daily operations and quality control to Molly. She oversees all winemaking and production operations of the winery as well as helping with grower relations and recommendations in the vineyards. Top-quality winemaking and grape growing, with passion, is her goal every step of the way. Sequoia Grove produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, among other varietals.
In 2009, Molly and Lars, her winemaking husband, started their own small project called Grow Wines. Their initial release is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Mt. Veeder appellation.
Beyond work and wine, Molly enjoys hiking, camping, cooking, running, travel, and making home improvements with Lars. She was born and raised in Summerland, CA, and now lives in Calistoga with her husband and young son.
