Phyllis Zouzounis is a pioneer woman winemaker, having begun her move into the field in 1980 by working in the tasting room at Dry Creek Vineyard. This experience led to her taking winemaking courses at the University of California, Davis, in the early 1980s because she was intrigued by wine and was considering changing occupational fields. After 15 years of experience there, where she worked her way up from the tasting room and cellar work to the position of assistant winemaker, she moved on as winemaker and general manager of another Dry Creek winery, Mazzocco Vineyards.
In 1987, Phyllis and Jim Penpraze, her former partner in the enterprise but who retired in 2013, started their own Dry Creek winery, producing one hundred cases of Zinfandel from one vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley. Today, Deux Amis produces over 1500 cases of Zinfandel from grapes grown in Sonoma County's Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys.
Phyllis is also the winemaker for Raymond Burr Vineyards, West Wines, Bedarra Vineyards, and Tre Ricci Wines in Dry Creek Valley and Starlite Vineyards in Alexander Valley. The 100-percent estate-grown vineyards at Raymond Burr offer Phyllis the challenge to produce great Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and rich, fruity Chardonnay. At West Wines, Phyllis crafts Cabernet Sauvignon, its signature wine, Viognier, and Chardonnay. The focus of her winemaking at Bederra Vineyards and Tre Ricci is Chardonnay. She specializes in producing outstanding Zinfandels at Deux Amis, but added Petite Sirah to its bottle offerings in 1995.
Phyllis is a great believer in balance. "My focus is balance. Balance of the vine, balance of the fruit, and balance in the wine."
