The stereotypical job for an Indian man is a taxi driver. It appears as though this particular career path appeals to many Indian men, seeing as how we typically see this specific ethnicity chauffeuring people around large cities. Before the terrist crimes committed on September 11, not many people thought twice about the abundance of Indians that drove taxis. It did however, become a big deal once Al-Qaeda aimed four large airplanes to some of our nation's greatest landmarks. Because of this incident, there has been a great deal of racism towards Indian men, especially taxi drivers. In Sarah Sharma's journal entry on "Taxi Cab Publics and the Production of Brown Space After 9/11," a Muslim taxi cab driver explains that drunken individuals will ask them offensive questions including, "Do you know Osama?" In a documentary I watched in my Ethics course, an Arabic taxi driver explained that a man approached him asking for a ride and suddenly stabbed him multiple times in the stomach, the whole time yelling racist claims and associating him with the enemy. These are only two of many stories regarding racism Indian men have faced. |
