Today society’s culture is shifting from the television and radio era to an era solely based on internet technology. Why is this shift important? What are the social implications of this new internet culture? The internet’s benefits of fast media, quick access to information, greater ability to keep in touch with distant family members and friends, etc. are outweighing the underlying affects of the internet: social isolation, increased sexuality, double lives, creation of idealized selves, etc. Many people do not think about how the internet produces the latter because those are subjects of social tension. The internet’s convenience and anonymity provide users the protection to express themselves in many different ways without social prejudices. This is what ultimately makes the internet so attractive and why it is taking over our mainstream media today.
