Philosophy is a rare major these days. Many argue that it is totally pointless and cannot be useful in real life whatsoever. If I had a dollar for every time that I heard: "what are you going to do with a philosophy major?" I'd be rich. Well we have many options. I'm going to Santa Clara School of Law, for example. Philosophy, though it may be grounded in certain concepts which closed minded people do not respect, does ingrain in you the very useful skill: to think quickly on your feet. Some may call it an ability to B.S. and some may acknowledge it as having the tact to be able to come up with a swift and at least seemingly irrefutable argument. This skill can be used in any field, and thus anyone who argues that philosophy majors are useless should try and argue against one of my peers; we'll give anyone a run for their money. Plus, we are fun people to hang around. We are usually pretty funny and care free, after all many of us don't even think the world really exists (not me though). Furthermore, how cool would the following scenario be? So, you walk up to someone on a warm summer day. He or she is lounging on the grass under the shade of a beautiful SCU palm tree. You ask your fellow student "Hey there, what are you up to." He or she then responds: "I'm just lying here ... philosophizing." How cool is that. It's a major that can be practiced anywhere, any time! You have to love it.
