Black Stereotypes at Santa Clara University

Stereotypes are bound to exist everywhere. Every race has stereotypes; Whites are all inherently oppressive and racist, Asians can't drive, Mexicans are dirty and unintelligent and Blacks are thieves. There is no getting around the fact that stereotypes will exist in all situations--the problem therein lies in how the stereotypes are perpetuated in certain environments. My topic is going to explore what stereotypes exist concerning the black community at Santa Clara University, the problems with these stereotypes, and what can be done to change these wrong, misleading views. The picture to the left depicts a controversial Vogue Magazine cover with Basketball Player Lebron James and Victoria's Secret Gisele Bunchaden. This caused controversy because people compared it to King Kong, with the evil black man taking charge of the damsel in distress. In fact, they even went as far as to compare it to previous Army enlistment posters. This is one example of stereotypes goign too far.
